About

My practice is devoted to therapy with gay men and counseling for gay couples. I specialize in gay, bisexual and trans issues, including relationships, intimacy and sex, as well as depression, anxiety, trauma, isolation and HIV. I have written extensively about the psychological and social issues of gay men and gay communities. My most recent book, released by Farrar, Straus and Giroux (and Penguin Random House in the U.K.), is "Out of the Shadows: Reimagining Gay Men's Lives."

My theoretical approaches vary with the client and our mutual objectives. I draw on psychodynamic, developmental, humanistic and narrative theory. All therapy relies on the relationship between client and therapist. It must be kind and supportive, and at the same time honest and challenging. Therapy is about self-discovery and the implementation of change.

If you would like to discuss the possibility of therapy or couples counseling, please contact me by phone or E-mail. I am happy to set up a telephone, Zoom talk or office appointment to discuss your issues and to answer any questions you might have. I also suggest that you visit my website at "waltodets.com".
