About

I specialize in psychodynamic therapy with adults confronting a wide range of life problems: relationship difficulties, trauma, work-related problems, depression, anxiety, issues of self-esteem, self-acceptance and shame, self-destructive behaviors, and feelings of discouragement in pursuing one's life dreams and ambitions. We will work together to understand your unique struggles, their causes, and the roadblocks to change in an accepting atmosphere that encourages open dialogue. My approach combines down-to-earth problem-solving with a complex grasp of the conscious and unconscious, historical and current life factors contributing to each person's struggles.

I also enjoy doing couples therapy - the process of helping couples in distress restore their connection. My approach with couples, as with individuals, is psychodynamic in that I "weave" back and forth between past and present experience, seeking to understand current patterns of perception and interaction and create new communicative and emotional bridges.

I have been a licensed psychologist since 1981 and psychoanalyst since 1999. In addition to my clinical practice I have authored numerous publications and have taught and supervised hundreds of trainees at various educational institutions, including, currently, The Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis and Maine Medical Center where I am a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry.
