About

My concern as a psychotherapist is establishing trust and security between my patient and myself. I treat the patient's symptoms with attention to symptom origins, and work to change character and personality traits that impair relationships and achievement: trust, attachment, healthy dependency and assertiveness. I treat adolescents and adults.

I treat eating disorders, self-harm, obsessive-compulsive disorders, post traumatic stress resulting from sexual abuse, and identity issues. Focus includes low self-esteem, friendship, romantic, and sexual problems. I have written eight books on these subjects and have been in full-time private practice for 38 years.

I published the first book on Anorexia nervosa in 1978 and three other books on that subject. I also wrote the most widely read book on Cutting and self-mutilation. I have lectured on these subjects at Harvard, New York State and New Jersey Medical Colleges.
