Allowing ourselves to be vulnerable in unfamiliar settings can be both terrifying and exciting, depending on the situation and our own unique perspectives. Entering into a counseling relationship is one setting that may be frightening at first, but can be empowering just by scheduling your first appointment. I Believe there are reasons for all human behavior. Over time, unhealthy tendencies in our behaviors and communication become normal; they were learned during childhood and used to help us cope during difficult times. While these "norms" are difficult to change, having an awareness is often the first step toward positive change. I use a client-centered approach during sessions and see my clients as the experts in their lives. An eclectic therapeutic approach allows for flexibility during our time together; therefore I provide cognitive behavioral therapy, utilize techniques used in positive psychology and believe that mindfulness is beneficial as an everyday practice. While life is a slippery slope and we often endure more than we ever believed possible, as Glennon Doyle would say "We can do hard things". Processing our struggles, frustrations AND passions for life, in a safe and comfortable setting can have a positive impact on both our mental health and overall happiness as we proceed in the stories we call our own.
