My name is Scott Gardner and I am a Licensed Addiction Counselor. I provide counseling to help people overcome addiction and the sources of distress that led to their substance use. It is natural to feel stuck in mixed emotions when thinking about changing substance use or other addictive behaviors. People may see the substances they use as allies, and it is normal to grieve the loss of those allies when trying to make a change. There may be times when a person will sacrifice the next five years to survive the next five minutes. Often, people do not feel as if anyone truly understands them. I approach counseling using a technique called Motivational Interviewing (MI), which helps clients resolve their mixed feelings about change and decide on a course of action that works for them. MI is a non-judgmental, non-confrontational way of guiding behavior change, with the client’s own desires, strengths, motivations, and needs serving as the compass. I view my work with clients as a collaborative partnership based on listening. Recovery is a deeply personal and often transformative venture. There are many pathways to recovery, which I invite my clients to explore for themselves. I will listen to your ideas about what you might want to do with your own life and together we will figure out how to get there
