I believe that most behavioral/ emotional problems have a common origin which is the failure to express true emotions and feelings. Individuals learn early on that which is acceptable and that which is not. As we push away feelings, and deny parts of who we are, these feelings don't simply disappear; instead, they remain hidden, and continue to influence behavior in unpredictable and negative ways. Because of this commonality in most problems, I welcome people who have problems with anxiety, depression, eating disorders, relationship problems, sexual concerns, and addictive behaviors. Facing frightening fears with the help of a skilled therapist leads to healing and growth. Making an emotional connection with a therapist can lead to a "corrective emotional experience" that can help heal old wounds from childhood and enable us to to see problems with fresh eyes from a new and constructive perspective. In my work with couples, I strive to create an environment of safety, (consistent with current brain science) that enables each partner to hear what the other is aying and trying to convey. Couples learn that in order to achieve connection and intimacy, they must honor, respect, their individual differences.
