Overcoming issues can sometimes involve using strategies to change our thinking and behavior. We all have developed habits of thinking and behavior that are not serving our needs. Therapy can help by identifying these patterns, introducing strategies to reduce them, and increasing more helpful patterns. Less-than-healthy patterns can also be traced back to coping required in the past. They helped back then, but are now causing problems. Therapy can help by increasing insight into the connections between these patterns and the past, processing the past experiences and emotions, developing alternatives, and building the freedom to choose. The above two paragraphs refer to somewhat differing approaches to therapy. I find it helpful to be flexible in applying both of these approaches to varying degrees, based on several factors including the client’s presenting concern, their goals and time frame, and their preference. I will collaborate with you to determine what is the best fit for our work.
