All people have a drive to learn about themselves, and when ill, to understand the personal meanings of their illness. I believe that all people, when given support, help, and knowledge of the mind, can heal. And I believe that most people can understand, with help, how unconscious conflicts cause illness, and that this understanding, and only this understanding, can sustain well-being. Our strategies for keeping balance in our lives may not be sustainable. Over exercising, over working, over spending, falling in and out of love ... these strategies depend on the dangerous condition of not knowing oneself, one’s unconscious mind and can sometimes lead to deeper problems. For the past 20 years, I have worked with children, teenagers and adults, individually or in groups, of diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, ethnicities, and sexual orientations. As a psychoanalytically-oriented licensed psychologist, I see self-knowledge as both the primary aim of therapy and the basis of health.
