About

My name is Dr. Joshua Dickter. I specialize in working with children and young adults, and have experience treating individuals managing a variety of symptoms. Some of these symptoms include depression, anxiety, executive functioning challenges, giftedness or (oftentimes) a combination of all of these traits and more. I strongly believe that child distress quickly becomes family distress; therefore, I advocate for a mixed treatment approach involving individual work with the child, family work between parents and the child, and parent coaching sessions or consultations if the parents are comfortable with it.

Kids do well if they can. Behavioral challenges are not a motivational issue, but a skill deficit. No child wakes up wanting to be sad or get into trouble. Their issue isn't that they don't want it enough; it's that they are missing a tool to achieve success. My job is therefore to find that missing piece and build it through cognitive behavioral therapy.

As a supervisor, I used to tell my staff to keep a folder of notes from previous clients, to remind them of why they do what they do every day. My prized note in my own folder is one from a boy that says "thank you for making therapy fun." This note describes my practice philosophy: it is possible to do good clinical work and have fun at the same time.
