Hi! My name is John Zufall, LCSW. I go by my middle name, Mel. I have over 20 years of experience working with diverse populations including clients dealing with addictions, depression, anxiety, OCD, and LGBTQIA+ issues, among others. While my approach to therapy is a cognitive behavioral approach, I believe therapy is best when tailored to the specific needs of the client. Like many in this field, my own experience in therapy was a major influence in terms of my wanting a career as a therapist. The therapeutic process can be such a powerful tool in terms of personal growth and leading a successful life I am of the belief that goals are crucial in terms of the therapeutic experience. Collaboration is important when setting realistic goals with clients. My role is to help guide clients in setting attainable goals that are theirs. Session one is so important because it says the tone of the therapist/ client relationship. I typically start off with a few minutes of “the business” side - confidentiality, messaging, etc. We will then spend time discussing what brought the client to therapy, what are the client’s goals, and what the client wants from therapy.
